With the recent influx of refugees to the islands and from the islands to the mainland, pregnant women and families with infants are often moved ‘en masse’ to new sites which are not always immediately equipped to help them. CHEERing’s emergency response team can conduct emergency assessments of babies’ nutritional status, and advise on supplemental nutrition for young children and pregnant women. We also provide intensive breastfeeding counseling and support for pregnant women and new mothers. Helping new babies to breastfeed exclusively reduces illness in infancy, which means healthier mothers and babies, an improved situation for agencies that care for refugees, and a lower burden around crisis care for the Greek health care system.
